Author/Storytelling - School/Library Visits

I have two published children's books, Sing Down the Rain (Kiva, 1997) and Read to Me/Vamos a leer (Star Bright, 2004).

Sing Down the Rain was written for students in third grade and up. When I visit a school with younger students, I share Read to Me and focus on storytelling with kindergarten through second grade and integrate storytelling into an author visit with students in third grade and above.

With all students, I share

  • my love of language;
  • stories from children's literature as well as family stories and historical biographies;
  • my writing history and writing process.

When I share Sing Down the Rain, I also

  • teach students about the Tohono O'odham and Sonoran Desert ecology;
  • answer students' questions about publishing;
  • show slides of the Michael Chiago's paintings while reciting the poem;
  • and when appropriate, I invite students to practice and chorally read the text.

With enough advance notice, my storytelling/author visits can be tailored to meet the specific needs of your students.
