LRC 585: Literature for Adolescents Facilitator: Judi Moreillon |
Booktalks for the 14th Annual Conference on Literature and Literacy for Children and Adolescents:
Literature as an Invitation for Creating Change
On Saturday, March 4, 2006, our class will participate in this conference to be held in the College of Education at the University of Arizona. Children's and young adult author Jacqueline Woodson and illustrator Yuyi Morales will be the main speakers at the conference. Classroom teachers, teacher-librarians, college-level educators, and authors will share their work with literature and/or students in breakout sessions. The conference runs from 8:15 to 2:15.
During lunch and book conversations (from 12:10 to 1:10), our class will present booktalks on recent young adult literature (2003 - 2006 publication dates). Participants will be invited to eat their lunches in several rooms. Two rooms will be available for people interested in YA literature. Half of our class will present booktalks in each room, and if there's time, we will switch presenters so participants can hear about as many titles as possible. We will provide a bibliography of the titles we share.
Each LRC 585 student is required to give two booktalks. Booktalks last two to three minutes - no longer! Your booktalk should begin with a hook. In your talk, you will give a glimpse of the plot, your response to the book, a hint of your evaluation of the title, and possible uses in the classroom (because our listeners are teachers - not students!). Reading a brief selection from the book may enhance your booktalk. You will bring the physical book to share.
Tell or email the course facilitator when you've decided on two books. Be sure no one else has already claimed those titles. Link to Students' Booktalk Commitments

Note: The course facilitator will provide several examples of booktalks. You can check out a video on booktalking by Joni Bodart-Talbot from the UA library. It is recommended that you write up your talk and practice. Time will be given in class for practice with an audience.
