LRC 585: Literature for Adolescents
Spring 2006

Facilitator: Judi Moreillon

Weekly Response Journal:

The goal of the experience is for you to explore your personal responses to the literature and articles you read for each class session and to our classroom and online discussions. As you read or after you have read each title/article, and/or after our literature discussions, record your personal response to the literacy event. Bring your response journal to class each meeting and use it to guide your participation in small group literature circles and/or whole class discussions.

Handwrite or keyboard your responses. Use loose-leaf paper and keep your response journal in a binder to facilitate turning it in to the course facilitator without interrupting the flow of your responses. Be sure to date your entries!

A personal response is just that - personal. The word "I" (my/we/our) should appear in your journal. If you don't have a personal connection to the theme, characters, and/or plot of a particular book, comment on the author's style and/or illustrator's technique. Discuss the issues raised in the books/articles and/or how you might lead a discussion on these issues with students. Make connections among the other texts you have read.

By making personal, intertextual, and real world connections to the literature, you will be able to assist your future students in doing the same. Developing connections is what makes lifelong readers. The weekly journal response is a critical part of your work in this class. See the schedule for dates your group will turn in your journals.
