LRC 585: Literature for Adolescents
Spring 2006

Facilitator: Judi Moreillon

Choice Experience:

Choose one of the following learning experiences. You must schedule a time to share your Choice Project with the class.

  1. Research Project
Conduct a research project involving young adult literature. Develop a rubric for evaluating your project.
  2. Genre Study
Using the course (or other) reference book as a place to begin, teach the class about the genre and engage us in a hands-on learning experience.
    Historical Fiction
    Non-Fiction (Informational Books)
    Biography
    Picture Books
    Fantasy/Science Fiction
  3. Poetry Anthology
Create a collection on poetry to use with young adult students in a classroom or library setting. Design a format for this anthology that will make it the most useful to you. Develop a rubric for evaluating your project.
  4. Personal Text Set
Develop a personal text set of young adult literature. This selection of books should be chosen because they are particularly powerful to you - stories you identify with that connect with your own life experiences and world view. These titles can also share a theme or topic.
    • You will display and present these titles.
    • Provide a 2-page annotated bibliography for your classmates (one copy for each class member and one for me).
    • Orally share why you selected these titles
    • Booktalk two or three of them.
    • Develop a rubric for evaluating your project.
  5. Professional Readings Reflection Journal
Read articles negotiated between yourself and the course facilitator. Keep a reflection journal on your responses to the articles. Turn in your journal along with a 2-page summary of this experience.
