LRC 480: Children's Literature in the
Classroom Facilitator: Judi Moreillon |
Class attendance and participation are critical components of this experiential course. If you aren't present, you will not be able to make up that evening's work. It is expected that you will make every effort to attend class, arrive on time, and come prepared. More than one absence and/or chronic tardiness, leaving early, or taking "breaks" during class time will lower your grade.
At the end of each class period, you will turn in your Literature Response. A quality literature response is worth ten points and represents your participation grade for that class session. If you miss a class, you must turn in your response at the next class period; you will then earn a maximum of five points. You will also turn in your reference book skeleton outlines, worth five points. If you miss a class, you must turn in your outline at the next class period; you will then earn a maximum of two points.
What is an experiential course? An experiential class involves hands-on, active learning on the part of the students/participants. Weekly literature circles in which you will share your personal responses to your reading of children's literature and discuss the issues raised in the texts are the central learning experience of this course. Browsing books selected with learning goals in mind will be part of each meeting. If you aren't present, you cannot participate in these and other active learning experiences.
If you must miss a class, please let me know - in advance, if possible. Make arrangements to speak with me before or after class to discuss your plans for keeping up with the class, and we will negotiate an additional assignment to attempt to compensate for the information you missed. If you are ill, please email me promptly, and we can negotiate electronically.
Your contribution to the class is essential. With the goal of developing our understanding of multiple responses to literature, we cannot benefit from your perspective if you are not present.
Each student will sign up for a "class job" as well. Job choices
include: read aloud literary memory, inquiry group facilitator,
reference book chapter, book club book coordinator, or a job proposed
by the student and agreed to by the facilitator. You will earn up to
25 participation points for your class job contribution. Failure to
perform a class job will result in a lower grade.
