Goals:
To experience then discuss history through oral storytelling and compare it with history via textbooks
To explore the process of presenting first-person oral narratives
Summary:
Telling the life stories of historical figures can help students make emotional connections to the events of human history. Oral biographies invite listeners to revisit the past and help them understand social studies in a way textbooks cannot. First-person narratives of women who influenced American history are particularly powerful. In this presentation, we will use song and story to share the lives and contributions of Harriet Tubman and Mary Harris "Mother" Jones. We will discuss the process of gathering information about historical figures and retelling their lives in story format.
