What Every Librarian Should Know about Reading Comprehension Strategies

For Arizona's Youth and Teacher-Librarians
Sponsored by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records
19 November 2005

Facilitated by Judi Moreillon, Ph.D., Assistant Clinical Professor
Northern Arizona University, Undergraduate Elementary Teacher Preparation Program-Tucson

Workshop Description
The participants and workshop facilitator will enter into dialogues about the opportunity for librarians to engage in explicit instruction in reading comprehension strategies. The workshop experience will provide opportunities to strengthen participants' understanding of reading comprehension skills and strategies to improve their instructional practices. Together we will build a community of mutual support and encouragement among Arizona's teacher-librarians and public children's and young adult librarians who have a shared interest and commitment to developing effective, lifelong readers.

OUTCOMES:
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Synthesize the research related to reading comprehension strategies and effective instructional practices.
2. Design sample lesson plans and library programs that directly address reading comprehension strategies for pre-K-12th-grade students.
3. Develop strategies to strengthen and increase the impact of collaboration between librarians, classroom teachers, and families to support reading comprehension.
4. Identify specific opportunities for sharing these practices in the library community.
