LRC 480/580: Children's Literature in the Classroom
Section 7
Fall 2003

Facilitator: Judi Moreillon

580 Students: Collaborative Lesson or Unit of Study Project

The goal of this learning experience is to practice classroom teacher - teacher-librarian or public - school library collaboration for the purpose of integrating literature into the classroom/library curriculum. If you are a practicing classroom teacher, you will collaborate with a teacher-librarian on this project. If you are a teacher-librarian, you will collaborate with a classroom teacher. If your career goal is in public librarianship, you will work with a teacher-librarian or a classroom teacher. If are not currently working in a school setting, I will help you connect with a practioner in the field.

Along with your collaborating partner, you will determine an area of the curriculum in which to integrate literature. You will document your planning process as well as compose a formal lesson plan including student assessments and a teacher evaluation for this project.

Planning Process: (10 points)
You may utilize a collaborative planning sheet and/or write a narrative that documents your process. (I have several different planning sheet templates and will loan them to you if you ask.) Please include the dates of your collaboration sessions in your documentation.

Lesson Plan: (30 points)
These are the components that must be included in your lesson or unit plan:

4. Student and teacher resources needed for the study (including a bibliography of children's literature)
5. Responsibilities of each of the collaborating partners
6. Organization of instruction (whole class, small groups, etc.)
7. Anticipated length of time to accomplish the goals and objectives
8. Copies of any graphic organizers
