Advocate

Literature and libraries are my passions. In my writing and service work, I advocate:

For full-time, professional teacher-librarians and high-quality library resources in every school;

For professionalism in the field of teacher-librarianship that centers on classroom-library collaboration for instruction;

For the integration of authentic children's and adolescent literature and technology tools into the classroom-library curriculum;

For school and public library collaboration and for family literacy.

Young moms and babies from Pima County Public Library's Project L.I.F.T. (Literacy Involves Families Together) posed with me and their signed copies of my book, Read to Me/Vamos a leer, which is a poem I originally written for this project. I donate a portion of my proceeds from this book to Project L.I.F.T.

I serve on the Advisory Board for School Library Media Activities Monthly, a magazine for teacher-librarians.

I am on the Board of Advisors of the Worlds of Words: International Collection of Children's and Adolescent Literature (ICCAL). The collection is housed at the University of Arizona.

In my work with the American Library Association, I serve on two national committees: American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Standards and Guidelines Implementation Task Force and Association of Library Services to Children (ALSC) Liaisons to National Literacy Organizations Committee.

As part of my advocacy work, I maintain Web pages for the Teacher-Librarian Division of the Arizona Library Association.

In the 2007-2008, I have been helping to organize an advocacy group to support the Tucson Unified School District teacher-librarians. Our goal is to preserve school librarian positions. Research shows a positive correlation between strong school library programs facilitated by professional teacher-librarians and student achievement, particularly in reading.

In 2004, I organized the Campaign to Save Arizona's School Libraries. The culminating initiatve of the campaign was the No School Left Behind @your library® presentation for members of the Arizona Legislature.
