Coteaching Reading Comprehension Strategies in Elementary School Libraries: Maximizing Your Impact

Chapter 5: Questioning: Advanced Lesson

Team Teaching

Fifth-grade teacher Patricia Boiteux and teacher-librarian Sara Paulson-Yarovoy field tested this lesson. They serve at PS 347, The ASL & English Lower School, New York, New York. They taught these lessons in the classroom.

In April 2007, Patricia and Sara conducted the entire lesson using a team teaching approach. This allowed one educator to read or solicit students' responses while the other recorded information. This photograph shows Patricia making notes while Sara reads Amelia and Eleanor Go For a Ride.

Addition to the QAR Graphic Organizers:

Patricia and Sara asked students to use the QAR designations that follow instead of color-coding. This method eliminated the need for highlighters:

"On the Line" = O
"Between the Lines" = B
"Unanswered" = U
