Coteaching Reading Comprehension Strategies in Elementary School Libraries: Maximizing Your Impact

Chapter 6: Making Predictions and Inferences: Advanced Lesson

Sara Thompson and Katy Seifritz team teaching

Teacher-librarian Sarah Thompson and language arts teacher Katy Seifritz field tested this lesson at McNair Middle School in Fayetteville, Arkansas in March 2008. They cotaught this lesson in Katy's classroom. In this photograph, they are preparing students to read and infer themes in Freedom Summer (Wiles/Lagarrigue).

Sarah and Katy adapted this lesson plan to include resources they preferred, that were appropriate for students, and that were available in their school library. During the guided practice, small groups of students read and inferred themes in White Socks Only by Evelyn Coleman, illustrated by Tyrone Geter (Whitman, 1999) and Going North by Janice N. Harrington, illustrated by Jerome Lagarrigue (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2004).

Emily's Supplement 6J

Emily's graphic organizer shows that she changed her mind about children being "smarter than adults" before and after reading Freedom Summer.

Jeffery and his small group examined the evidence in Going North (Harrington/Lagarrigue) and inferred the theme: "Never to give up your dream.".
