Desert Duets: Sonoran Desert Poems for
Two Voices
A Work-in-Progress
Poetry is seeing your world with
the eyes of your heart. (Bookmarks pdf file)

- I love living in the Sonoran desert. Our home is at the foot of the
Santa Catalina Mountains on the outskirts of Tucson. We have quite a
few wild animals that live in or travel through our neighborhood: desert
tortoises, coyotes, javelinas, black-tailed jackrabbits, screech
owls, Sanborn's longnose bats, chuckwallas, spadefoot toads, rattlesnakes,
mourning doves, Gila woodpeckers, cactus wrens, roadrunners, tarantulas,
black widow spiders, and scorpions.
- I also love writing and reciting poetry. One of my favorite poetry
books is Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices by Paul Fleischman.
Like Mr. Fleischman's poems, my Desert Duets were written to
be read by two or more voices.
- "Desert Lowriders" has been color-coded to facilitate collaborative
reading. One person reads the words on the left side (blue text) and
one person reads the words on the right (red text). The words that are
on the same line (black text) are to be read by both voices at the same
time. Students should start by reading the title together. (They may
have to practice a couple times before it sings!) Click on the title,
"Desert Lowriders," to see the poem. The poem will print out on two
pages.
